View network connection status in Windows 2000

With the exception of dial-up connections, by default, Windows 2000 doesn't show the status of each

network connection in the system tray. A status indicator in the system tray can provide you with a

visual indicator of when network traffic is occurring on a computer. It also gives you quick access

to the connection's Status dialog box. The little tray icon indicates both outgoing and incoming

traffic by lighting the screens of the two computers in the icon.

When you double-click the icon, it displays the Status dialog box for the connection. This shows

connection status, connection duration, speed, and packets sent and received. Or you can right-click

the icon to quickly open the Network And Dial-Up Connections folder. This is particularly handy

if you're testing or troubleshooting the connection and want quick access to the folder.

To add the status icon to the system tray, open the Network And Dial-Up Connections folder and

open the Properties for the connection. On the General tab, select the Show Icon In Taskbar When

Connected option and click OK.

Windows 2000 Server

Shutdown method for the Terminal Services server

The method for shutting down a normal server--which is Start | Shut Down and click Shut Down

from the drop-down menu--isn't recommended for servers running Terminal Services (TS).

Microsoft recommends using the command-line utility tsshutdn to shut down TS servers. The

tsshutdn utility allows you to shut down TS in a controlled manner. When you initiate a shutdown,

it notifies all of the connected sessions. If you have sessions with open files, the server will prompt

you to save the files.

To shut down a TS server, type tsshutdn in the command prompt. This will initiate a 30-second

countdown for the shutdown. If you need to cancel the shutdown, simply press [Ctrl]C.

If you want to restart the computer, add the /reboot parameter (i.e., type tsshutdn /reboot). You can

also restart and shut down a remote computer by adding the /server:name parameter (i.e., type

tsshutdn /server:myserver).
