Disable automatic DNS registration
Windows 2000 Server ships with a DNS server that can accept dynamic update requests from
Windows 2000 client computers. This allows computers to automatically update their DNS records.
However, if your Windows 2000 servers are connected to the Internet and use a third-party DNS
server, you might not welcome this dynamic nature, for at least two reasons: One, your ISP
probably won't allow you to update the DNS, which means you'll only generate excessive failed
updates in the log. Two, you probably don't want your ISP to know the internals of your network.
Here's how you can disable DNS dynamic update on Windows 2000 client machines:
Open the Network Connections folder.
Right-click the network connection and select Properties.
In the Properties dialog box, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties.
In the resulting dialog box, click Advanced.
Click the DNS tab and deselect the Register This Connection's Address In DNS check box.
Click OK to close each dialog box.
But there's more: Depending on the configuration and services installed on your computer,
different components perform the dynamic DNS registration. If you want to turn off dynamic
registration for all components, check Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q246804.
