Recover a desktop Explorer interface

When you log on to a Windows 2000 system, the Explorer interface gives you the Start menu,

Taskbar, desktop, and other familiar elements. However, it might happen that you log on and see a

blank desktop. If launching another instance of Explorer.exe via the Task Manager doesn't do the

trick, you'll need to use an alternate method to recover the missing interface.

Blank desktops can have at least two causes: There's an older copy of Shdocvw.dll in the computer's

%systemroot% folder, or the %systemroot% permissions have been modified to remove Read

permission from the Everyone group.

If an application placed an older copy of Shdocvw.dll in the computer's %systemroot% folder, the

system finds the old version in the %systemroot% folder before it can locate the correct version,

which should be located in the %systemroot%\System32 folder.

The solution is to delete the file from the %systemroot% folder. Press [Ctrl][Alt][Delete] to open

the Task Manager, choose File | New Task, and enter Cmd.exe in the Create New Task dialog box.

When the command console opens, change to the %systemroot% folder and delete or rename the

Shdocvw.dll file. Then, reboot the computer.

If the %systemroot% permissions were modified to remove Read permission from the Everyone

group, you need to restore Read permission for the folder to the Everyone group. If you receive an

error that says the user profile couldn't be loaded, it's likely that Read permission was also

removed from the subfolder permissions. Change the permissions accordingly to overcome the

problem.
