Troubleshoot memory usage with Qslice.exe
When you're trying to analyze or troubleshoot slow system performance, it's important to
understand how the system and applications are using the system's CPU. An application consuming
an excessive amount of CPU time reduces CPU availability for other applications and slows down
overall system performance.
The Windows Task Manager's CPU column on the Processes tab provides CPU usage information
for each process. The Task Manager shows the CPU usage by value, but not graphically. If you want
to view CPU usage graphically, use QuickSlice (Qslice.exe), one of the Windows 2000 Resource
Qslice.exe displays a single window with a list of all processes and a graphical representation of the
CPU time used by each. A red bar indicates kernel time, and a blue bar indicates user time. If you
need to focus on a particular process or group of processes, you can double-click a process to open
its own window, which shows CPU usage for that process. You can open multiple windows at once to
monitor multiple processes.
QuickSlice is just one tool you can use to monitor CPU usage and system performance. Pstat.exe,
another Resource Kit tool, is also useful, as are the Task Manager and Performance consoles. If
you don't have the Windows 2000 Resource Kit, you can download QuickSlice from the Microsoft
