| Saving and clearing an event log |
| If you want to document the error messages that have |
| occurred on your server over time, one of the best ways to |
| do so is to save your server's Application, Security, and |
| System logs. To do so, begin by opening Computer Management. |
| In the console tree, expand Event Viewer and then select the |
| log you want to save. Choose Action | Save Log File As to |
| open the Save As dialog box. Browse to select the folder in |
| which you want to store all log files. (We recommend that |
| you create a folder specifically for storing your old log |
| In the File Name text box, type a name for the log |
| file. We typically save our log files with the date as part |
| of the name so it's easier for us to identify the log file's |
| timeframe. Click Save to save the log file. After you've |
| saved a log file, you can clear it by choosing Action | |
| Clear All Events. If you're prompted to save the file, click |
| To open a saved log file, you'll need to first open |
| Computer Management. In the console tree, select Event |
| Viewer and choose Action | Open Log File. Browse to the |
| appropriate folder and select the log file you want to open. |
| From the Log Type dropdown list, select the type of log file |
| (Application, Security, or System) and then click Open. |
| Event Viewer will display the log file you open in addition |
| to the current Application, Security, and System logs. |
