Install Windows 2000 Server with RIS

Windows 2000 ships with a feature called Remote Installation Service (RIS). This feature allows

users to install customized Windows 2000 on their computers over the network without bothering

you. RIS's limitation is that only Windows 2000 Professional can be deployed this way.

But there is a small trick that allows you to use RIS to install Windows 2000 Server.

Copy the i386 folder from your Windows 2000 Server CD to the hard drive.

Use a text editor to open the Txtsetup.sif file from the i386 folder.

Change the ProductType under the [SetupData] section from 1 to 0 and save the file.

Run the Risetup.exe and create an image.

When the Risetup.exe is finished, change the ProductType again to 1 and save the file.

If you don't like manually changing files, you can get a special patch for RIS that allows you to

install Windows 2000 Server through RIS. You can find the patch in Knowledge Base article
