CONTROL COOKIES TO PREVENT WEB SITES FROM STORING INFORMATION

ON YOUR COMPUTER

Many Web sites store cookies on your computer when you visit the site as

a means of keeping track of your visits. For example, many sites use

cookies to let you log on automatically to the site; others track how often

you visit the site. You might want to exercise some control over cookies

on your system if for no other reason than to protect your privacy. You

might also want to review the cookies stored on your system and delete the

ones you don't want.

You have three options for handling cookies: Allow cookies to be

created, have Internet Explorer prompt you before the cookie is created, or

prevent them altogether. To set these options:

1. Open Internet Explorer and choose Tools | Internet Options.

2. Click the Security tab, click Custom Level, and then scroll through

the list to find the option Allow Cookies That Are Stored On Your

Computer.

3. Select Disable (to prevent cookies from being stored), Prompt (to

have Internet Explorer prompt you when a site attempts to store a cookie),

or Enable (to allow all cookies).

Next, take some time to review the cookies already stored on your

computer. Open the Properties for Internet Explorer and click Settings on the

General Page. Click View Files on the Settings dialog box to open the

Temporary Internet Files folder. Click the Type column header to sort the

folder by file type, which groups all of the cookies together. Select and

delete the ones you don't want stored on your system.

There are other options for managing cookies and other privacy aspects

of Internet Explorer. Check out your favorite download site for

third-party privacy applications such as SuperCleaner, CyberScrub, and others

that not only manage your cookies but other types of files and security

settings, as well.
