Secure your servers with SP3

Microsoft recently released the third Service Pack for Windows 2000. Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes

all the patches from previous Windows 2000 service packs and all security patches that were

previously distributed with Windows 2000 Security Rollup Package 1.

Before installing SP3, carefully read the release notes, which include important information

regarding compatibility and other issues. It's important to know that SP3 automatically upgrades

your system to 128-bit encryption. Even if you later remove SP3, your system will continue to use

128-bit encryption, and you won't be able to revert to 56-bit. (Kerberos, EFS, remote access, RPC,

SSL/TLS, CrypoAPI, RDP, and IPSec use 128-bit encryption.)

SP3 includes a new version of Windows Installer, 2.0. Again, even if you remove SP3, you won't be

able to get version 1.1. Additionally, SP3 includes Automatic Updates service, which allows users to

automatically download and install updates.

Microsoft has also updated some deployment and support tools that were originally distributed on

the Windows 2000 CD-ROM.

Learn more about SP3 on the Microsoft Web site.
