Configure a RADIUS server

After you install Internet Authentication Service (IAS) on your Remote Authentication Dial-In

User Service (RADIUS) server, you need to register the service in the Active Directory. Open the

Internet Authentication Service console from the Administrative Tools folder and click Register

Service in the Active Directory on the Action menu.

You can then also change some IAS properties, which isn't required in all cases. Just select

Properties from the Action menu and go through the dialog box.

An important step is to configure the clients that will be allowed to use your RADIUS server. Note

that these clients in the RADIUS terms aren't individual users or computers but are dial-up and

VPN servers that have special RADIUS client software installed. One such client is the Routing and

Remote Access server in Windows 2000 or a WLAN Access Point.

To add a client, right-click the Clients node and select New Client. In the Friendly Name dialog

box, type a name for the client (like VPN Server 1) and click Next. On the next screen, type an IP

address or DNS name of this client and the secret shares that are only known to the client and the

RADIUS server. Click Finish.

Now your server is ready. You just have to set up your RADIUS clients to use this IAS server and

the RADIUS server. The exact configuration steps depend on each individual client.
