Keep the desktop visible on a locked computer
Locking computers with a screen saver is a great way to add a bit of security, whether for a server or
workstation. The screen savers included with Windows 2000 work fine for locking the computer,
but they all prevent you from seeing the desktop.
Though that's not often a problem, there may be times when you want to see the desktop after it's
locked. For example, you might want to keep tabs on a download or monitoring program while
you're in and out of your office but not using the computer.
If you've ever found yourself in a similar situation, you'll appreciate a screen saver available on the
Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit Supplement One CD.
Look in the \Apps\clearscreensaver folder and copy the files Clear Screen Saver.scr and
ClearSaverSvc.exe to the hard disk. Open a console and execute the command clearsaversvc -i to
install the screen saver. Then, configure the system to use the screen saver through the properties
The Clear Screen Saver does just what its name implies: It has the password-protection features of
other screen savers, but it's clear. Even when the screen saver is on, you continue to see the desktop
and everything that's happening on it, allowing you to keep tabs on the system without being
concerned that anyone might gain access to it.
