Insert tabs in table cells so you can use decimal tabs in one column in Word XP!

Using the short answer is that you can insert a tab character in a table by pressing Ctrl-Tab. But you don't need to insert a tab character to get decimal alignment in a table.

Create a table and select all the cells in the column for which you need decimal alignment. Then set the button at the left-hand side of Word's horizontal ruler for decimal tabs by clicking on it until you see the decimal tab icon (an upside-down T with a dot next to it). Finally, create the tab by clicking on the place on the ruler where you want the tab to be. If you already have numbers in the column, they will immediately align themselves with the decimal tab. If you enter new numbers, they will automatically align with the tab as well—without your having to enter a tab into each cell.

This trick works with decimal tabs only. If you need the equivalent of left, right, or center tabs, format the column with left, right, or center paragraph alignment. If you need indented first lines or indents for subsequent lines only for paragraphs in a column, format the paragraphs with an indented or hanging first line.

Easily sum filtered results in Excel 97-2000-2001-2002

When you use the AutoFilter feature to analyze a list, you'll often want to sum a field in the filtered results. For example, if you have a table of all your company's sales, and you want to see the sum of the sales for a particular state, you can filter the list on the State field and sum the Sales field. If you change the list to display a different state's sales results, you want the sum to update appropriately.

To achieve such results, you can't use the SUM function as you normally might. Instead, you must use the SUBTOTAL function with the filtered list. Fortunately, it's easy to create the SUBTOTAL formula. In fact, the AutoSum button automatically creates a SUBTOTAL formula when it's used in conjunction with a filtered list.

To create an subtotal formula, select any cell in the list you want to analyze and choose Data | Filter | AutoFilter from the menu bar to display dropdown arrows in the lists top row. Then, use any one of the dropdown arrows to filter the list for a particular criterion value. Then, select the cell immediately beneath the column of numbers you want to sum. Click the AutoSum button and you'll see that Excel inserts a SUBTOTAL formula into the cell. Click the AutoSum button again to complete the formula. You can now change the lists filter criteria and the SUBTOTAL formula will return the sum of whatever data is visible in the list.

Fine-tune form and report control placement in Access 97-2000-2002

When you add a control to a form or report, Access tries to aid you in sizing and aligning it using the Snap To Grid feature. The grid is typically visible as you work with a form or report in Design view, but if it isn't you can display it by choosing View | Grid from the menu bar. Although the Snap To Grid feature is usually helpful, when you fine-tune the placement of some controls you may find that you need to move some of them to positions that aren't exactly aligned with the design grid. You can toggle whether the Snap To Grid feature is active by selecting Format | Snap To Grid while in Design view. However, you don't have to take this step--you can temporarily disable the Snap To Grid feature by holding down the [Ctrl] key. Then, you can use your mouse or the cursor arrows to place the controls exactly where you want them.
