Keep vital information at hand

If you're a typical administrator, you probably manage several servers, which can often leave you

wondering about the machines' basic information. For instance, if you're using a KVM switch, you

can quickly forget the basic information, such as the machine's name, IP address, installed service

packs, and related information.

You probably won't remember all the information about all your servers, but there are several

methods you can use to remind yourself, such as writing down the information or manually (or

scriptically) creating wallpaper with the information you need. But all of these methods have their

drawbacks.

Perhaps the best, simplest solution for remembering important server information is the BGInfo

utility, a free downloadable application. BGInfo automatically creates wallpaper that displays the

computer information you specify. To run this application, you only need to identify the

information you want to appear on the wallpaper: last boot time, CPU info, default gateway, DNS,

host name, IP address, MAC address, domain, etc.
