Transplant event logs to help them grow
Windows 2000 maintains several event logs to keep track of system, general application, security,
and application-specific events. By default, Windows 2000 stores the event logs in
%systemroot%\System32\Config. As long as you have plenty of disk space in that drive, the default
location is fine. But if you're starting to run out of space, or you want the logs to be able to grow
without impacting storage space for programs, documents, etc., move the logs to a different drive.
You can't move the logs through the Event Viewer, but you can make a registry change to
accomplish the move. Open the Registry Editor and select the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog
In that key, click the subkey that corresponds to the log you want to move. For example, if you want
to move the System log, click the System subkey. The File registry value defines the log filename
and location; double-click the File value and specify the new path and filename.
After you've specified the location for the log files, close the Registry Editor and restart the
computer. If you need to view an old log file, you can open it in the Event Viewer by choosing Action
| | Open Log File and browsing to the old file's location. |
Reminder: Editing the registry can be risky, so be sure you have a verified backup before making
