Control Dynamic DNS settings

Windows 2000 supports Dynamic DNS (DDNS), which enables a Windows 2000 client to request

that its host (A) and pointer (PRT) records be updated in its name server. The DHCP client and

RAS client services can initiate the DDNS request for a Windows 2000 Professional client.

In some situations, you might want to disable DDNS. For example, the client's name server must

run the Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2003 Server DNS Server service. If you're not using a

DDNS-capable DNS server, turn off DDNS at the client to reduce network traffic.

Control DDNS on a per-adapter basis

Enable or disable DDNS on a per-adapter basis by using the properties for the adapter's TCP/IP

protocol:

Open the Network And Dial-Up Connections folder and open the properties for the adapter.

Double-click the TCP/IP protocol and click Advanced.

Click the DNS tab and enable or disable the Register This Connection's Addresses In DNS option

to enable or disable DDNS.

Control DDNS globally

Use registry values to disable DHCP-initiated DDNS globally if you prefer not to control DDNS

through the TCP/IP properties.

To prevent the DHCP Client service from requesting A and PTR record updates, set the following

DWORD value to 1 to disable or 0 to enable DDNS:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\

DisableDynamicUpdate

To disable PTR record updates but allow A record updates, set the following DWORD value to 1.

Set it to 0 to allow PTR updates:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\

DisableReverseAddressRegistrations

Control DDNS for the RRAS client

There aren't any registry keys that control DDNS for the RRAS client. Instead, open the properties

for the connection and use the DNS tab of the TCP/IP protocol's advanced properties to enable or

disable DDNS for the connection.

Note: Before making any registry edit, be sure to first back up the registry so that you can restore

it if something goes wrong.
