Establish trust between Windows 2000 and NT4 domains

If you have Windows 2000 and NT4 domains on your network and want NT4 users to be able to

access resources from the Windows 2000 domain, you must manually establish trust relationships

between the domains.

Follow these steps to set up Windows 2000 to trust Windows NT:

Log on to the Windows 2000 domain controller as the administrator.

Open the Active Directory Domains And Trusts console from the Administrative Tools folder.

Right-click your domain and select Properties.

On the Trusts tab, click Add in the Domains Trusted By This Domain section.

In the Trusted Domain box, type the name of the Windows NT4 domain you want to trust.

In the Password box, type a password for this trust, retype it in the Confirm Password box, and click

OK.

A message box tells you that the other side of the trust relationship doesn't exist and that you

should create it. Click OK.

Click OK and exit the console.

Follow these steps on the Windows NT4 primary domain controller (PDC) belonging to the domain

you want to trust:

Log on to the Windows NT4 PDC as administrator.

Open User Manager For Domains in the Administrative Tools folder.

On the Policies menu, select Trust Relationships and click Add under Trusting Domains.

In the Trusting Domains box, type the NetBIOS Windows 2000 domain name that will trust this

NT4 domain.

In the Initial Password box, type the same password you used when you set up the trust on Windows

2000.

After confirming the password, click Close and close the User Manager For Domains.

The Windows 2000 domain now trusts users' accounts from the Windows NT4 domain. This means

that users from Windows NT4 can now access resources in the Windows 2000 domain, after proper

permissions are set on the resources.

If you want both domains to trust each other, set up an additional trust for NT4 to trust the

Windows 2000 domain.
