Scheduling a task to run automatically

Windows 2000 includes the Scheduled Tasks graphical utility

that enables you to easily schedule tasks on your computers.

(You can still use the AT command line utility to schedule

tasks as well.) Some examples of tasks you may want to

schedule include daily or weekly backups and scanning for

viruses. You can also use the Scheduled Tasks utility to

schedule a script file to run on a regular basis. To schedule

a task using the Scheduled Tasks utility, begin by choosing

Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Scheduled

Tasks. Double-click on Add Scheduled Task to start the

Scheduled Task Wizard. On the Welcome page, click Next. When

prompted, select the application you want to schedule. If

necessary, click Browse to select the application's executable

file. When you're ready, click Next. Select the schedule for

the task. You can schedule a task to run:

--Daily

--Weekly

--Monthly

--One time only

--When your computer starts

--When you log on

After you've selected a schedule, click Next. Specify the

start time for the task and any other scheduling options.

These options will vary depending on the type of schedule

you selected (daily, weekly, monthly, and so on). Click Next.

Enter the username and password you want Windows 2000 to use

when it runs this task. Keep in mind that the username you

specify must have the necessary permissions to perform the

task. Click Next, and then click Finish. You can monitor the

status of your scheduled tasks by opening the Scheduled Tasks

utility and reviewing the Last Run Time and Status columns.
