Use Web folders to share files, part 1

If you want to share files between users on your network, you'll probably use the Windows

file-sharing model. Windows 2000 ships with another file-sharing feature called Web folders. Web

folders, or World Wide Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV), is a file transfer

protocol that supports secure transfers.

Web folders is similar to FTP but provides a more secure method for transferring files over the

Internet and intranet. Passwords sent across the network are encrypted. If you're using SSL on the

server, the data transferred is also encrypted which makes Web folders the most secure way to

transfer files on your network.

Web folders can use two protocols: the IETF standard WebDAV or the Microsoft FrontPage protocol.

Since WebDAV is platform-independent, you can use it on a machine running Windows, UNIX,

Linux, Mac, etc. It also doesn't matter what Web server you have; you can use Microsoft IIS, or even

Apache.

In part two,I'll describe how to install IIS on your Windows 2000 Server in order to use Web folders.
