Share files with Web folders, part 2

Part one provided you with a brief overview of Web folders. Now, in order to use Web folders, you

must install IIS on your Windows 2000 Server and then create a virtual folder on the Web server.

To do so, follow these steps:

On the server with IIS, run the Internet Services Manager console.

On the chosen Web site, create a new virtual folder by right-clicking on the site and selecting New

and then Virtual Directory.

Follow the wizard to create an alias and to specify the path to the virtual directory on your hard

drive.

On the dialog box with access permissions, select Read, Write, and Browse.

Now your users can access this folder through My Network Places just like any other shared folder.

Open My Network Places.

Double-click Add Network Place and follow the wizard to create the shortcut to the Web folder.

Some applications like Office 2000 and XP allow you to directly work with a Web folder. Also, IE

5.0 and later supports World Wide Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV). In IE,

select Open from the File menu, type the URL to the Web folder, and select the Open As Web

Folder check box. Now you can work with the Web folder like you would with any other shared

folder.
