Configure VPN and enable PPTP

The VPN Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) is implemented at Layer 2 (Data Link) in the

ISO-OSI network model and works by encapsulating VPN data inside PPP frames. These frames

are then encapsulated in IP datagrams and sent over an IP network.

PPTP is installed by default on Windows 2000 Server computers as a part of Routing And Remote

Access Service (RRAS). However, RRAS isn't enabled and configured by default. Follow these steps

to install and configure your server as a VPN server and enable PPTP:

From the Administrative Tools folder, run Routing And Remote Access.

Right-click the server and select Configure And Enable Routing And Remote Access. On the first

page of the wizard, click Next.

On the Common Configuration page, select Virtual Private Network (VPN) Server and then click

Next.

In the Remote Client Protocols dialog box, verify that all protocols are listed and then click Next.

On the Internet Connection page, select the connection to the Internet and then click Next.

On the IP Address Assignment page, select the method for assigning IP addresses to the clients, and

then click Next.

On the next screen, specify whether you want to use RADIUS server and then click Next.

Click Finish.

To modify the PPTP configuration, right-click on the Ports node in the Routing And Remote Access

console and select Properties. Select WAN Miniport (PPTP) in the list box and click Configure.

The dialog box that appears will list configuration options.
