Add these licensing utilities to your toolbox

All versions of Windows 2000 servers include the Terminal Services technology that allows users to

work on a remote computer and see its output just like they were working directly behind that

computer. Many administrators don't like how Microsoft handles the licenses for accessing the

Terminal Server. Even though Microsoft changed this a bit, you'll still find a great value in two

utilities from the Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit.

Terminal Services Licensing Reporter (Lsreport.exe) is a command-line tool that displays

information about licenses granted by the Terminal Services licensing servers. Running the utility

without any parameters causes the utility to write all of the information into a file named

Lsreport.txt. You can use any text editor to view this file. You can also specify another output file

and even another licensing server.

Another useful Terminal Services utility from the Resource Kit is the Terminal Services License

Server Viewer (Lsview.exe). This GUI-based utility displays the name and the type of the Terminal

Services license servers in the current domain. It's helpful for monitoring and checking the status

of license servers. The utility regularly checks licensing servers and displays the last time each

server was available.
