Install a RADIUS server

As defined in RFC 2865, Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS) is "a protocol for

carrying authentication, authorization, and configuration information between Network Access

Server, which desires to authenticate its links, and a shared Authentication Server." In plain

English, RADIUS is a central server for managing authentication, authorization, and configuration

for all of your dial-up and VPN clients. For instance, if you have WLAN access points on your

network, you can use RADIUS server for user authentication and accounting.

Microsoft implemented RADIUS server in the Internet Authentication Service (IAS). To use IAS

on your network, you just need a Windows 2000 Server and a Windows 2000 domain controller

running Active Directory. Now, follow these steps to install your RADIUS server:

In the Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs and click Add/Remove Windows

Components.

Select Networking Services and click Details.

In the dialog box, check the Internet Authentication Service and click OK.

Click Next to finish the installation.

When prompted, insert the Windows 2000 CD-ROM.

Click Finish to close the dialog box.

Before you can use your newly installed RADIUS server, you have to configure it and each

individual RADIUS client.
